Some destinations look like they belong on a luxury travel mood board: beautiful old towns, dramatic coastlines, boutique hotels, rooftop dinners and streets that seem designed for slow afternoon walks. The surprising part? You don’t always need a luxury budget to experience them.
While destinations like Paris, Santorini and the Amalfi Coast can come with overwhelming price tags, there are plenty of places around the world where you can get the same expensive-looking holiday experience for considerably less. The trick is knowing where to go, when to visit and which parts of the destination offer the best value.
1. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest has the architecture, grand cafés, thermal baths and river views you’d expect from a much more expensive European capital. The city is particularly good for travellers who want a taste of old-world luxury without paying Western European prices.
You can spend an afternoon at one of its historic thermal baths, walk along the Danube, admire Buda Castle and finish the evening at a stylish restaurant without necessarily blowing your daily budget. Accommodation can also be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you stay slightly outside the most tourist-heavy areas.
2. Porto, Portugal
Lisbon gets much of the attention, but Porto can deliver an equally beautiful Portuguese escape, often with a slightly more relaxed feel. Think colourful tiled buildings, elegant bridges, riverside restaurants and centuries-old wine cellars.
The Ribeira district looks particularly luxurious when viewed from across the Douro River, yet you don’t need a five-star budget to enjoy the city. Porto is also a great destination for food and wine lovers. A long lunch, a glass of port and an evening wandering through the historic centre can feel indulgent without requiring an extravagant itinerary.
3. Marrakech, Morocco
If your idea of an expensive holiday involves riads, courtyards, rooftop breakfasts and beautifully designed interiors, Marrakech should be high on your list. The city is famous for its riads, traditional Moroccan homes built around central courtyards, many of which have been transformed into boutique accommodation. And staying in one can feel far more luxurious than its price suggests.
Beyond accommodation, Marrakech offers plenty of affordable experiences: Explore the medina, visit traditional souks, spend time in gardens and enjoy Moroccan cuisine at everything from tiny local restaurants to atmospheric rooftop spots.
4. Cappadocia, Türkiye
Few places look quite as cinematic as Cappadocia. Its otherworldly rock formations, cave hotels and hot-air balloons create the impression of a destination reserved for luxury travellers. Instead of choosing the most famous cave hotel or paying for every premium experience, you can stay in a smaller guesthouse, explore the valleys independently and enjoy the landscape from several spectacular viewpoints. A hot-air balloon flight is the splurge-worthy exception, but even that can be treated as the one big experience of the trip rather than part of an expensive daily itinerary.
5. Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenia’s capital has the polished appearance of a much pricier European destination. Ljubljana is compact, green and exceptionally photogenic, with a pedestrianised old town, riverside cafés and an imposing castle overlooking the city. It’s also an excellent base for exploring Slovenia. Lake Bled, the Julian Alps and other natural attractions are within relatively easy reach, meaning you can combine an elegant city break with an outdoorsy holiday. For travellers looking for affordable European destinations that feel luxurious, Ljubljana is an underrated option.
6. Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is one of those destinations where simply walking around feels like an experience. Lantern-lit streets, historic architecture, riverside cafés and colourful markets give the town a distinctly romantic atmosphere.
Vietnam is also well known for offering excellent value for travellers, particularly when it comes to food, local transport and accommodation. In Hoi An, you can find stylish boutique hotels and beautiful stays without automatically paying the prices associated with luxury destinations elsewhere in Asia. Add affordable tailor-made clothing, Vietnamese food and nearby beaches, and the destination becomes even more appealing.
7. Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town has the ingredients of a luxury holiday: dramatic mountains, beautiful beaches, vineyards, design-led restaurants and spectacular hotels. What makes it interesting for budget-conscious travellers is that you don’t have to experience the city exclusively through its expensive side. There are excellent casual restaurants, affordable experiences and plenty of natural attractions that cost little or nothing to enjoy.
You can spend one day exploring Table Mountain and the coastline, another visiting the Cape Winelands and another simply enjoying the city’s neighbourhoods and beaches.
8. Albania’s Riviera
If you’ve been looking at the Greek islands and wondering whether there is a more affordable alternative, Albania’s Riviera deserves attention. Coastal towns such as Himarë and Sarandë offer turquoise water, Mediterranean scenery and waterfront dining, while prices can be lower than those found in some of Europe’s most famous summer destinations.
The experience becomes even better if you travel outside the busiest summer weeks. You’ll generally find a more relaxed atmosphere while getting more value from your accommodation.
How to Make an Affordable Destination Feel Even More Luxurious
Choosing the right destination is only half the equation when you travel can have just as much impact on your budget. Consider travelling during the shoulder season, when the weather is still pleasant, but demand is lower.
So, instead of booking the most expensive hotel in town, look for a well-reviewed boutique property in a convenient neighbourhood. And rather than filling your itinerary with paid attractions, spend on one or two memorable experiences and let the destination itself provide the rest. A beautiful breakfast overlooking a river, a late-night walk through an old town or a swim with a mountain view doesn’t have to come with a luxury price tag.
Luxury Is More About the Experience Than the Price
The best part about travelling on a budget is realising that luxury isn’t always about five-star hotels or private transfers. Sometimes, it’s a beautiful room in an old building, an incredible meal that costs less than expected, or having an entire viewpoint almost to yourself. So, if you’re planning your next international holiday and want it to look expensive without actually being expensive, look beyond the obvious destinations. The world has plenty of places where affordable travel and luxury experiences can comfortably coexist; you just need to know where to look.
